About

This is a community package of Strata, maintained independently and unaffiliated with the Strata project. It repackages the official upstream Linux release unmodified.

Strata is a fast, keyboard-first GTK 4 file manager. It combines spatial Miller-column navigation with Icons and List views, instant fuzzy filename search and everyday file operations.

  • Three browser modes: navigable Columns, an Icons grid and a sortable List table.
  • Keyboard-first control: directional movement, history, location entry, pane filtering and an F1 shortcut reference.
  • Recursive search with Ctrl+K that works while the tree is still being indexed.
  • Create, rename, cut, copy, paste, trash and delete, with pins, history and a jobs dashboard.
  • GIO/GVfs remote locations such as SMB shares and SFTP servers.
  • Six bundled themes, custom themes and compact or airy density.

Previews in this package: text, source code, Markdown and HTML previews work. Image, PDF, camera RAW, audio, video and archive previews and thumbnails show "Preview unavailable". Strata parses those formats in a separate Bubblewrap sandbox and deliberately never falls back to parsing them unsandboxed; Flatpak does not allow an application to create that nested sandbox, so these previews stay off until Strata supports a Flatpak-compatible isolation path.

Permissions: this package can read and write your home directory and the usual removable-media mount points (/media, /run/media, /mnt) - a file manager cannot browse a directory tree through the file-chooser portal. The rest of the host filesystem is not exposed. To browse the whole filesystem, run flatpak override --user --filesystem=host io.github.lgse.Strata.

The Trash view, the Devices list and network locations come from GVfs running on your desktop session; install your distribution's gvfs package if they stay empty. Updates come from Flatpak: Strata's own in-place updater is disabled in this package. The system file-chooser backend and encrypted-volume unlock integrations change host configuration and are not available from the sandbox.
